NSW State Championships 2012-13 Results

Peter Robinson, Wangi, Lake Macquarie, Thursday, 13 December 2012

The final weekend and two heats of the six-heat championship series was sailed on Saturday 8th Dec. The forecast was uncannily accurate and delivered the promised 25kn NNE and gave us "champagne sailing" conditions.

Thirteeen OKs lined up at the starting line and got away only a little late once a replacement for the committee boat was found. The fleet enjoyed an impromptu circus act at the wing mark when Tim and Eddie performed some unscheduled manoeuvers resulting in an early swim for both. They recovered well and held the fleet off to again be in the lead bunch at the top mark where, unsually, several more OKs took a tumble with Dave O'Donnell forgoing his early advantage.

With the heat win Tim looked to have the championship stiched up, but the next three of Eddie, Mark and Cracker were all on 10 or 11 points. Cracker must have cracked with an OCS ditching his chances but Eddie rose to the ocassion and found form for his second heat win in the series to secure 2nd. Tim's result confirmed his State Championship win and Mark Skelton with a close third.

Eddie's performance was also so strong he took out the State Championship Handicap trophy followed by his prodigal son - Dave, returned from a season off, was sailing very well for a second place.

Once again our heartfelt thanks go to Sandra O'Donnell who made the regatta happen, and to her team of very capable race officials. Thanks to the Wangi ASC for a great regatta and we're looking forward to our Australian Championships starting 28th Dec 2012.
